My Primitive Keeping Room

So this will be our "Keeping Room"

It's our favorite room in the house, because when we only have the lamp on the bookcase on and the fireplace going it's a very comfy and soothing room.

The wingback chairs are a fright right now because I haven't decided what fabric to have them recovered in. They are Lane recliners that I got off of Craigslist.org for $40.00. That's $20.00 a chair! The end table in between them I got off of the same site and I only paid $30.00 for it.

Although the painting on the wall is anything but primitive art I can't bear to part with it since my husband bought it for me when we were in Amish country in Pennsylvania. I took this picture when we still lived in the cabin. I wish it didn't have the glare on it but there was nothing I could do about it. Anyway, the picture has sentimental value and so it might get put in the closet and only come out at Christmastime.

I need to buy some new black bookcases like I have in the living room. The ones in this photo will get relocated to my art studio.  These bookshelves look similar to the ones in the living room but ours have a back which I would paint the same color as the wall so that it would blend in. I love this display and would like to recreate it in this room, but instead of the baskets at the bottom I'd put the CD books and storage boxes that our cassettes will be in.

 I found this star at Bed, Bath & Beyond for $14.99!

I'm want to buy this set of books to put all the CD's in and I'm going to use photo boxes to put all the cassettes in. We have a ton of music. I found these on Amazon. They are called Bellagio-Italia CD/DVD Books The set of 6 books costs $65.00 and each book holds 64 CD's.

This is what's on the opposite wall from the wingback chairs. I could paint the fireplace black, but I'm not sure I want to mess with it. There are so many intricate details on it that would need sanding in order for the paint to stick. However I will probably use chalk paint and paint the computer armoire black because the oak is such a dated look, The wood color of the fireplace actually matches the frame of the painting that's sitting on it. The painting is of a moose grazing and is very nice, but it's definitely not Primitive art so I don't know what I'm going to do with it. I might just buy another print and use the frame.

The carpet is going and is going to be replaced with this flooring that I found at Western Carpet 411 It's from their "Hand Scraped Collection" by Tecsun and is called Hickory and is a laminate. The cost is $2.15 sq. ft. I'm hoping that by the time I get the money to put the flooring in they will still have it as they change their stock quite frequently to keep up with the latest trends.

I found this braided rug at Rugs USA. It's from their Easy Living Collection and it's called Rhody Charcoal. They also offer free shipping which is pretty important if you order a large rug. I want a large enough one that I can fit it under the front two legs of the two recliners.



I think I'll paint the walls either Biscuit or Bagel. 

I found this cute table lamp at Allyson's Place for $59.00! The shade's sold separately. But the lamp itself is 24" tall which makes it perfect for a bedroom table lap. I like that it has the option to have the candle light on, or the light bulb or both. A very good deal for a lamp like this.

My Primitive Bedroom

This has been the hardest room for me to nail down. I have bought several different comforter sets only to change my mind, return some and get stuck with the rest. For those of you following my blog you know that originally I wanted to go with a nautical theme, hence, the reason behind me having this beautiful set. We bought a brand new queen-size bed right before we knew the house would actually sell and, unfortunately, the bed is too thick and the comforter about 8-inches too short. So there it sits in the original bag in my closet. Thankfully it fit on the blow up bed we bought so when we have company I can dress it up with this.

Before I got the brainstorm idea to go nautical with the cabin and consequently this house; I was going for a cottage look in yellows and blue; hence the reason for this bedding set. However, we had a California King when I bought this. So another beautiful set stored in my closet. I haven't had any luck selling either one and they are both brand new. Yikes! Thank goodness my husband is a VERY understanding man.

So that brings me to the present...
I have to be sure that this next bedding set is the right one because it will be the last set I buy. So now on to my Primitive Bedroom. I'm really excited about this!

Here's what our bedroom looked like when we did our final walk thru. All of the furniture isn't ours. We have two no frills solid wood highboy dressers and two matching nightstands. They have basic lines and will look awesome painted with black chalk paint when I get to that point. The headboard will have to be replaced. Our bed is the same size as the one in the photo below.

So now you know what I have to work with. Let's start from the ground up shall we?
First thing to go is the carpeting. I want to replace it with wood laminate like in all the rest of the rooms in the house.

This flooring is from the Barnwood Collection. It's called Jefferson Prairie and I found it at  

Western Carpet 411.

 I want to buy a large braided rug to go under foot of the bed so our feet won't freeze when we get out. Growing up as a kid in house with a raised foundation and hardwood floors I can tell you they do get cold so slippers are a must, but they floors are gorgeous. I particularly like this flooring because it has wide planks and they are rough cut. It will give me the perfect look for my Prim décor. I found this one at Rugs USA. This is the bedding set I want. It's called Bingham Star and you can find it at a lot of online sites because it's popular. I found it as well as with a wide selection of accessories at Piper Classics,  and Allyson's Place. She has some great deals there. Anyway, by the time I'm through it will be a bit pricey but I think it will be worth it.

 I only need the swags and a valance for our window in the bedroom. We have mini blinds. I also found these at Allyson's Place for $23.95. There's matching drapes and bathroom accessories too.

 

I'm thinking of  changing the wall color to bagel. I won't use Sherwin Williams paint though. I'll just take the chip to Lowe's and have them match it using Valspar paint. Our friends are professionals and they say it's the best; almost equal to Dunn Edwards but a lot less expensive.

I also think this stacked box light would look cute on the dresser. I found it at The Country Craft House on ebay for $26.99.

These would also be cute there. I found them at Here's Your Sign which is a great site for all kinds of signs, stacking blocks, and chalkboards.

I also think this light is adorable which I found at The Lakeside Collection for $16.95!



My Primitive Guest Bathroom

I love, love, LOVE this bathroom. While I can't duplicate it exactly I think I can capture the essence of it. I like the lighting fixture but my mobile home has light boxes and they can' be taken down. I love the idea of having artwork in the bathroom. I mean you spend quite a bit of time in this little room why not make it interesting? I don't have room for a side table like this room has but I think I can make do with what room I do have.

So this is what the guest bathroom in our new house looks like. I know, I know...the wallpaper is hideous. The good news is that, that is NOT wallpaper. The design is stamped into the wood and so it will be real easy to paint over.



  

The shelf display below is on the wall where the green towel is hanging in the photo above. I got it from The Lakeside Collection. I have a matching shower curtain, toothbrush holder, and valance to these towels, but they are more country than Primitive.

 I want to replace the towel rack with these simple ones. I found them at Piper Classics.

I want to put wood trim around the mirror and then paint it black. We had it around the mirror in the cabin (see photo below). You use liquid nails to attach it to the mirror and wa-la! It stays put and gives a very plain stark mirror a touch of history. I wonder if I could use Liquid Nails and glue a picture frame onto the front of the medicine cabinet door and put a piece of artwork in it? Just a thought.

This color is from Benjamin Moore. It's called HC-12 Concord Ivory. I would paint the upper portion of the wall this color. The lower half would be Mopboard Black

 

I found the border that's in the photo example at the top of the page at Amazon for $18.99 a spool. It's from York Wallcoverings Best of Country wallpaper book.

The carpet would have to go and I'd want to replace it with a rustic laminate like this one. I want to put this flooring throughout the whole house and use braided area rugs. I just love the warm rich tones of this wooden plank style flooring. It has a rough look to it that reminds me of many of the tavern floors in Colonial Williamsburg.

I found this colorful braided rug at Rugs USA for a reasonable price and they offer free shipping on ANY order! I would crochet a smaller version of this for the top of the toilet tank where an oblong box will go (see photo)

This neat large box will hold several rolls of toilet paper and would go on the toilet tank. I found it at Old Country Crows for $17.95. I like the small treenware bowl on top which I think would look neat with a few balls of soap.

 

I want to paint the cabinets in the bathroom black like this, but I want black hardware on it not shiny gold. I've found the knobs at

 

I'll swap our silver faucets out for the Wellington Oil Rubbed Bronze faucet below eventually.

I would only need the valance for the bathroom window. I found it at Country Porch for $21.50. The pattern is called New England Black Check, however, the shower curtain that matches this set is a bit pricey for my tastes. It's $60! And that doesn't even include a liner. So maybe I'll be visiting a fabric store and sewing my own curtains. There's a great quilt shop in Calimesa and another in Beaumont that probably has fabric that will work. These kinds of curtains are a snap to sew.

 

I found this toilet paper holder/magazine rack at Sawdusty on Etsy for $60.

My Primitive Kitchen

The picture below is what I'm going for. I really like how some of the cupboard doors have fabric in them and I'm considering putting glass doors on the three largest cabinets where my dishes are so I can do this.

This is how our kitchen looked when we did our final walk thru before we bought the house. I was so excited to have so many cupboards since the cabin had very few. The cupboard under the stovetop has pullout drawers, but the gas lines are there and it's not really safe so I want to use the cupboards under the new raised counter for pots and pans. I'll use it for canned goods once we get the other cupboards built.

We are going to take the dropped ceiling out and replace the 3 fluorescent lights with one ceiling fan. I like this black fan. but I want one with a light kit. I can replace the lampshades with these punched tin ones. Garbers Crafted Ligting - tin light shades and lighting kit

The light over the sink will be replaced with a  pendant light.

The hardware would be replaced with black knobs by Stone Mill for $3.76 each and drawer pulls by Stone Mill for $4.36 each. I found both of these at Lowes

I would paint all the cabinets Tricorn black. It might be difficult to cover them and would take several coats, but I don't mind the work. I think it would look great with the gold countertops when I'm finished. 

I was going to replace the garden  window but now I think I will keep it as it would be a cool place to place my Star Vine Canister Set. I found it at Amazon for $59.00. That's about $30 cheaper than anywhere else.

 ... and some primitive block sets like the one below. I found it at Here's Your Sign Primitives for $19.99. I also love these burner covers. They are too pretty to be put on a stove top, but I thought they would look great in the garden window as plates. I found them at RagedyAnn on Etsy for $40.

 

As you can see there is another counter to the left. I want to raise it so it's even with the other counter and put some more matching cabinets under it. I want to make sure one of the cabinets can hold our trash can.   

I'm hoping I take the tile off behind the stovetop and hopefully sand it smooth so I can put this wallpaper up. It's paintable Beadboard Wallpaper that I found at Home depot for about $30 a double roll. It's the cheapest solution I can come up with. I won't know what I'm getting into until I try to take those tiles off.  I'm going to paint the walls the Golden Hills color by Benjamin Moore. I think it will look great against the black cupboards.

  







I found this really cool removable sticker set  at American Blinds  for $22.99 and I would put the calendar on the fridge. It's a dry erase board. I'd put the "Friends" and "Family" stickers on wall above the stovetop.  I like this tea kettle too and I think it would look cute in the garden window. I found it at Primitive Country Treasures

 



 This is the fabric I'd use to make a valance for over the kitchen sink.
